I've got nothing...

...to talk about today.

So, let's all admire my work in this month's "Bead Trends" shall we:

Oooh! Aaaah!

Oh, and just so you don't think I'm getting a swelled head or anything, let me relate little story I like to call "Kelly is a BIG dork."

At the Pasadena show on Saturday, I had a copy of the magazine with me which is not as conceited as it sounds when you realize that neither I nor my friend Julie who was with me have gotten our subscriber copies yet. I got my contributor copies (but only 2 when there should have been 3) back when they sent my jewelry pieces back to me. So I had brought the copy to show Julie and then shoved it back in my purse before we started walking around.

Sometime during the day, we came upon a display at a booth that had a gorgeous necklace and my friend said "oh, isn't that the same type of stone that you used in your necklace that's in the magazine?" (so really, my impending dorky behavior is all HER fault because she started this with her question).

And I said "yes, that looks like the same stone."

While we were talking, the booth owner (and maker of the necklace) came over and joined the conversation and I asked her if the stone was, indeed, snakeskin jasper. She wasn't sure but said that sounded right and wanted to know how I knew the name and before I realized it, I had whipped the magazine out of my purse and was FORCING A COMPLETE STRANGER TO LOOK AT MY PROJECT IN THE MAGAZINE.

All I can say is that I got caught up in the moment or I was high on bead fumes from the show or something because it wasn't until we were driving home that I realized what an incredible dork I made of myself forcing this poor woman to look at my silly little project - especially when her necklace was just as nice if not nicer (actually, I think it WAS nicer) than mine.

At least here on the blog you can decide if you want to look at my stuff or not. This lady (who was really very nice about what a loser I was being) had nowhere to run because she was trapped inside her booth.

This is probably one of my favorite pieces that I've ever done. And yeah, I know, it's big and clunky/chunky, but I don't care. It's called "Amphitrite's Necklace." Extra points if you know what "Amphitrite" means (without cheating by Googling).

That's it for today. I'm going to try to work on a new necklace at lunch, but the Muse she has been scarce this week so don't know if I'll be able to pull it off.

Oohing and ahhing all over the place. I have done that too, so I can join the dork brigade. I have so many pieces in Bead Trends that it was becoming cumbersome to carry around a years worth of the publication, so I took the cue from the fabulous Lorelei and made myself a portfolio. I cut up the mags with my pieces and made a sort of photo album. Actually, I might make one for the artist coop gallery I belong to for forcing on unsuspecting potential customers there....Actually, it did come in handy at Bead & Button...when I was introduced to the editor of a mag who wondered why I had never submitted there...I showed it to her and she showed interest. Of course it is a competitor but great photos! I think that it is okay to toot your horn Kelly. I am proud of you for being in the publication. You deserve it!
I have some new things to photograph and show just as soon as I can...my muse has been fleeting as well, sometimes she is sleeping late at night when I need her to be on steroids!
Enjoy the day!

Being the lurker that I am , I must break out from my "shell" and say that my training in English Lit, okay, Greek mythology, has served me well because not only can I tell you that Amphitrite is the Greek Goddess of the Sea, but that she was also Poseidon's mistress. Now who's the dork, huh!?

By the way, I would have whipped out the mag and tortured a few captive audiences myself!

Erin - good idea about the portfolio. I'm getting too many issues to carry around as well (not as many as you, though LOL). Now, if I can only run into an editor the way you did - I've had NO LUCK with the other pubs. Can't wait to see your new stuff. Drat that muse, anyhow! She's so fickle!

Sharon - You are right! Although, I've heard her described as his mistress OR his wife. I think it kinda depends on which version of the mythology you are reading. Either way, I thought my necklace would be perfect for her LOL!
